Jonah 1:3 But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed
for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port.
After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the
LORD.
Jonah ran in
the opposite direction as far away from Nineveh as he could get. We may not
literally run away from God’s command but isn’t disobedience our biggest
problem? How many times in the last week have we failed to obey the still small
voice of God’s Spirit? How open are we to hearing what God has to say, giving
time to reflect on it and then determining to respond positively in whatever
way we can. Like Jonah we are called to be representatives, speaking God’s
message to those who are far from him. We may believe that the people won’t
want to know, that they may reject us and our message yet even the sailors who
eventually threw Jonah overboard seemed to show more faith in God than his own
prophet. There are many around us who are open to the spiritual realm they may
also be desperately lonely or facing some major personal crisis. Let us take
the initiative to reach out to others rather than ignore them or go the other
way.
Show us Lord where we are disobedient and then help us
to turn back to you.
