Missional Mentoring -an Introduction

The aim of these posts is to highlight one Bible verse a day which relates to discipleship and specifically to helping people grow in their faith and missionary effectiveness. I believe all Christians are called to make disciples but that many of us are weak in this area. My prayer is that my blogs will challenge, provoke and encourage believers to be better at making missionary disciples who will reproduce others.

I am a Christian who is passionate about Jesus and what I believe is important to Him. His desire is to transform lives, he has certainly changed me radically over the last "few" years not least through marriage, parenthood, and service for Him both in the UK (Including London, Wales, Middlesbrough and Northallerton),in France and Niger, West Africa. I have been greatly blessed through being discipled and by mentoring others both within my own culture and across cultures.

What is missional mentoring? It is about a one to one or small group relationship where we seek to spur one another on. We all need the encouragement of those we trust and the accountability of those who care enough to ask meaningful questions and listen carefully. This need remains however mature we may be in the faith; discipleship is always about learning to follow Jesus better.

Why missional? There is a huge crisis across the Western world, particularly in Europe as the church has declined and become increasingly irrelevant to the un-churched. The church was called to mission from the very beginning and is failing both to win converts and more importantly to equip and train new believers to be effective in their evangelism, social action and fight for justice. We are called to grow closer to God, to disciple others and transform society. It is a tough call and we need to be intentional about helping each other to fulfil this God given mandate.
