Called to be a Slave of Unbelievers?

1 Corinthians 9:19 (NLT)  Even though I am a free man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ.
A slave of Jesus? Yes. Submitting to other believers? Yes. But a slave of unbelievers in order to bring them to Christ? Paul’s radical approach to unbelievers is actually asking us to follow Jesus example of humble service even to those who are far from God. This is a vital attitude if we are truly to be a sweet smelling perfume to seekers. If we approach with an “I know what you need” attitude we are likely to push people away. However, if we are ready to listen and learn, to serve and be available then we may gain a hearing. God is already at work in the hearts of unbelievers, will we enable the Holy Spirit to continue His work? Evangelism is vitally important but our attitude dictates how powerfully God can work. Let us imagine what it is like to be evangelised by a zealous and intense believer. It may make us feel uncomfortable for the wrong reasons. People are not objects to be preached at but potential friends to be nurtured. They are not to be dropped as soon as they have made a commitment but encouraged and discipled. As Paul goes on to say we need to fit in with the unbeliever not demand the seeker fits in with us.
Father give me sensitivity to others, a serving attitude and your wisdom.
