Jeremiah 9:22-24 (NLT)
This is what the Lord
says: “Bodies will be scattered across the fields like clumps of manure, like
bundles of grain after the harvest. No one will be left to bury them.”This
is what the Lord says: “Don’t let
the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or
the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in
this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing
love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight
in these things. I, the Lord,
have spoken!
There
is very great danger that we become very selective in our reading, preaching
and study of the Bible. Many churches focus heavily on God’s love because of
the broken nature of the lives of most of us. We need healing, we need
assurance, we need building up, the argument runs. However our Lord through the
prophet Jeremiah expresses his anger and jealousy because of the idolatry of
the people. Idolatry is very common today amongst God’s people. It is true that
the Lord demonstrates unfailing love to us but he is also a God of justice and
righteousness. The two qualities come together in God and should not be
separated. God sent the most awful judgment on His people for their sin, surely
this was done as a warning to His people of all generations to truly know the
Lord, to understand Him and delight in Him alone.
Father help us to
appreciate you fully, for your love and your justice.
