Invisible Evangelists
–Unnoticed, Untrained, and Ignored
According to Spurgeon, “Every Christian is either a
missionary or an imposter.” In other words all Chrstians are called to witness to and represent Jesus throughout their lives. When working overseas in pioneer areas, missionaries
often spend much of their time doing the work of an evangelist even if they are
not gifted for it because the job desperately needs doing and there is no one
else to do it. But what about people who are gifted evangelists in our
churches? Peter Wagner reckons about 10% of church members are gifted in this
way which seems a reasonable figure from my experience. Where are they?
Considering how vitally important mission is how can we ignore this vitally
important resource? Most British Christians don’t like the idea of witnessing
or sharing their faith, the least we can do is recognise those who are good at
it and make sure they are valued, trained, equipped and encouraged. Of course,
we all have a job to do in sharing our faith but where are the evangelists who
will do this job best? Sadly I know too many churches where evangelists are
sitting in pews unaware of their gift or feel they are on the margins of church
life unsupported and discouraged. The
time has come to find, nurture, develop and honour those who will be at the forefront
of the battle to rescues people from Satan’s clutches. We all have a job to do
in identifying, encouraging and praying for evangelists and spurring others to
do the same.
Father help us to identify the people you have
gifted to do the work of an evangelist and help them.
