Acts 2:1-4 (NLT) On the day of Pentecost all
the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound
from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house
where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire
appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the
Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them
this ability.
On the day of Pentecost the 120 believers including women
and the twelve apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. After Peter’s
evangelistic sermon a further 3000 were filled with the Holy Spirit, people
from at least 14 nations. The miracle of the 120 disciples speaking so many
different languages not only drew the crowd’s attention to God but also pointed
to God’s desire that all nations hear the Good News about Jesus. A desire
expressed by the prophet Joel quoted by Peter in his sermon, “...everyone who
calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” To hold back from inviting all to respond to
God’s claim on their lives is working against God and His puposes. Are we
extending such an invitation to others? Are we helping each other reach the
lost or have we lost the plot?
Father,
you filled your disciples with your Spirit to witness powerfully, may we also
be empowered to be effective.
