Lk 10:1-3 Seventy Two Workers is not Enough

Luke 10:1-3 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.  He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.  Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.
Up to this point in his Gospel Luke has used the name Jesus but now “the Lord” chooses 72 other disciples. Luke perhaps wants to remind us of Jesus position and authority, he is the master and has the right to tell his disciples what to do and expects their obedience. He had already sent out the 12 (chapter 9) and now sends out many others to prepare the way for his visits. Though 72 seems to be a large number of disciples Jesus immediately asks them to pray for more because there are so few. There are clearly no less needs today so let us pray, not for converts or even disciples so much as workers. God’s kingdom doesn’t need armchair critics but those ready to obey and work.
Father send more workers Lord to areas of great need both in our own communities and places like Turkey, Pakistan and Niger.
