Luke 10:4 Do not greet anyone on the road.
Jesus is saying that we should stay
focused on the mission God has given us. In those days greetings were extremely
important and could take a long time. Jesus is not telling his disciples to
ignore or be rude to others. At Bible school one of my lecturers was known in the
community for ignoring people outside of classes. Some Asian and African
students in particular were offended at her apparent coldness as she walked by
them, without a word, in the corridor. Jesus is not asking us to follow an
attitude which probably stems more from Western individualism than the kind of
open, warm, friendly attitudes we are called to express. However Jesus doesn’t
want us to get caught up in meaningless chit chat or for us to put off the most
important things. Jesus was concerned for those in nearby towns and villages
who have not had an opportunity to consider or respond to God’s message. There
were those who were suffering who needed healing or deliverance.
Father
help us today to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus that we might do your will.
