Luke 10:4 Do not take a purse or bag or
sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
Don’t be careful! Don’t make adequate
preparation! Don’t have a contingency plan or take sensible precautions! Jesus
seems to be saying, it is going to be dangerous but extra provisions aren’t going to help. You have a job to do and you
need to trust God to do it. The disciples were praying as they went but not for
protection or safety but for more workers! Are we too safety conscious? Surely
it’s not wrong to plan and do what we can to prepare for unseen eventualities
or is it? Jesus clearly wants His disciples to trust in Him not in other
things. For those of us who don’t have to be concerned about where our next
meal is coming from the temptation is to rely on our own capacities rather than
God in all that we do. However careful
we are stuff happens, Jesus never promised us peaceful sailing but rather that
he would be with us even in the perfect storm! It is sometimes in the most
difficult circumstances that we truly learn how faithful and loving our Father
is.
Lord
help us to be wise as serpents and as trusting as little children.
