Timothy 1:13 (NLT)
Hold on to the
pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith
and love that you have in Christ Jesus.
Are we getting wholesome teaching? Are we giving it? The apostle Paul
was steeped in the Old Testament and was able to passionately and faithfully
pass on God’s truth with integrity. Today preachers often shy away from the Old
Testament, fail to present a balanced view of the truth and allow their gospel to be shaped
by culture rather than challenging the common sins of our society. Relevant topics
are often chosen but the work of digging deep to apply Biblical principles is
often lacking. Appropriate exposition, that is clear explanation and
interpretation of Bible passages is often absent so that many Christians are
seriously ignorant of what communion, baptism and other fundamentals of the
faith mean. We all have a responsibility to have a clear understanding of the
basics so we can teach others and correct wrong thinking. Our love for Jesus
should be shown in our love for his word.
Lord help us to seek the
truth and hold firmly to it.
