Matt 5:8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure…
Not only do we need to be wholehearted in our commitment
to God but that single mindedness of purpose needs to impact our other relationships.
Any mixed motives concerning helping others will be revealed in one way or
another and have a detrimental impact. If we need affirmation, need to be
needed, like the sound of our own voice, enjoy giving advice, or show our pride
through a superior attitude we are spoiling a relationship which might otherwise
help another move closer to God. Do we really want the best for the other, do
we truly want to develop them or do we want some glory for ourselves. Even expressions
of low self esteem can come from a desire to draw attention to oneself rather
than build up another. Let us instead take the example of John the Baptist
seriously who said of Jesus, “He must become greater and greater and I must
become less and less” (Jn 3:30).
Father expose any impurities in my heart that I might be wholehearted in my love for you and genuinly want the best for others.
